Hoshiko’s Anime Time Management

This post is written as part of a project organized by Kai. Gotta say, Kai’s invitation’s timing is just right because this is something I’ve been thinking about lately.

Compared to last year, I’ve less free time on hand, which also means less time for anime and other related hobbies. Okay, before I go any further into how I manage my time when it comes to anime and the likes, I shall roughly talk about my usually fixed schedule. I have a day job as software engineer, working only on weekdays, eight to five. After work, I will go for a quick jog or just work out on my stationary bike or do some strength exercises for about 30 minutes. When all that plus more is done, thanks to short commute time in my city, it will be about 7.30 to 8pm. As for weekends, I’ll go for a two-hour badminton session with colleagues on Saturday and doing absolutely nothing on Sunday. I need my rest. This is my usually fixed schedule.

But sometimes, things don’t always go as planned. There are times when I have deadlines to meet, and that’s when I find myself working overtime trying to complete the tasks on time. And then sometimes, I’ll go for dinners, special events, birthday parties, movies, shopping trips for days in a row. And then sometimes, I travel. That’s when I’ll fall behind. Furthermore, I’ve accepted a few side projects this year to do after working hours.

Now, how do I manage my time when it comes to watching anime, reading manga, playing games and such? Well, it’s hard. I’ve dropped a few series I intended to follow at the start of the season due to lack of time. On top of that, I’m falling behind long running series such as One Piece, Naruto, Fairy Tai, and Hunter X Hunter (2011). But because I want to keep up with the latest anime, the discussions and blogging, this is how I do it – I prioritize. I’ll use this season (Winter 2012) as an example to illustrate how. Another, Nisemonogatari and AnoNatsu are three anime that I make sure I’ll watch on the day they’re available in my time. Shounen series such as Naruto, One Piece, Fairy Tail and Hunter X Hunter (2011) are usually put on hold until I have the time so I might accumulate up to 10 episodes or more before I finally get to them. Persona 4, Guilty Crown, RinLag, NichiBros will be watched during the week, just not on the day it’s released. Maybe a few days later, depending on my schedule. You see, when you put it one anime episode per night, it isn’t too bad. Before bedtime is good time to slot in 20 minutes worth of anime. As for Bakuman 2 and Chihayafuru, I’ve decided to watch it marathon-style after they’re completed. I usually marathon anime during weekends, night time. Weekends daytime is reserved for chores, music, books among other things. Oh, if I have long holidays like CNY break and stuff, I will try to marathon a completed series.

Sometimes when I travel, I’ll load a few anime episodes into my iPad2 so I can watch them at the hotel when I’m free. The viewing experience is not as good though. I read blogs and tweets via iPad2 or Galaxy S2 too if I’m on the move. I used to bring PSP with me, but I’m running out of games to play on it and I have no plans of buying PS Vita….yet.

Like most anime fans, I have a few on-going manga that I’m reading, just not that many. Including the new addition, Nisekoi, to my list, I have five. Well, if I include irregular readings of K-ON, Vampire Knight, Switch Girl and Maid-sama, there’s more. Please don’t ask me why I’m still reading about the K-ON girls in college. Besides the regular five, I sometimes pick up completed series to read like Hatsukoi Limited and a few other manga. It’s not hard to fit manga into my schedule. It’s usually Wednesday or Thursday for the shounen series and once a month or two for shoujo manga. Plus, it takes only a few minutes. And occasionally, when I can’t sleep I’ll browse the sites aimlessly for completed manga to read. They’re usually one-shots or super short series. So, I don’t really have problem with manga since it’s less time-consuming compared to anime. One episode of anime, I can read a few chapters. Right?

Another one of my hobbies is playing video games. I own a PS3 and a PSP, but more often than not, they’re left to collect dust. I’ll be honest here, while I play games, I suck at managing my time for it. It’s like there’s no more room in my schedule for games except during holidays. I’ve made a tweet a few weeks ago, announcing that I’ve finally completed God of War I on my PS3. After a year! That doesn’t look good. My goal is to complete all the God of War series. I’ve completed all the PSP versions, God of War I (yay!) and I’ve started God of War II. I am planning to buy God of War III soon. And I think God of War IV is coming out this year or next?! Gosh, going on the rate that I am, I’ll never catch up. There’s GTA V coming out as well, I heard….So anyway, I try not to feel like I’m being forced to play games (although some of my friends like to ask how’s my progress and it’s embarrassing to tell them I’m still where I was five months ago) so I’ll get to it whenever I can.

P.S I have one question for iPad owners, do you guys browse and read manga on it? How is it for you guys? Because I’m having horrible experience reading manga online via iPad.

  1. Sometimes I also do the same thing when I’m on the subway, I tend to read manga or browse blogs if the Wifi permits me, but usually the best time for me to enjoy comfortably my anime hobbies is when I get home. I already have all the bookmarks that I often on my laptop. As for iPad, I just read manga ordinarily like scanning images because I usually download those files as images. I still need to explore it because I just switched from PC tablet.

    • I was hoping I could read manga scans online instead of downloading like I do usually on my laptop. But gosh, the experience was terrible. T.T

Well, I do agree with you. I think the best time to enjoy anime is when we’re at home. Nothing beats that. =)

  2. I have to prioritize my anime too. My list of titles that I must see on the same day includes: Last Exile, Mirai Nikki, Ano Natsu, Inu x Boku, Nisemonogatari, and Mouretsu Pirates. The rest I usually watch a day or two later. The only exception is Shana which I’ve left for several weeks at a time before catching up on weekends.

  3. Your methods for watching anime sound a lot like mine. It’s a lot easier to manage when you only need to watch one or two episodes a day. A lot of the time, it’s difficult to manage more than that.

Also, glad to hear about Nisekoi. Hope you’ve been enjoying it so far.

    • I agree, so in other words, we also have to choose wisely the anime to watch.

Yeaps, I’ve been enjoying it very much. Thanks for writing about it on your blog, otherwise I might not have even heard of Nisekoi. =)

  4. Your work time is just as clustered as mine, it’s surprising how you’re able to manage what you’re doing without multi-tasking, lol. I think you planned quite well, unlike me who’s pretty much in a multi-tasking mess D: I also had a similar schedule like yours when watching new ongoing episodes but since downloading isn’t as easier as back then, my ongoing anime schedule is a bit messed up. Speed for torrents can be a bit random for me here.. but oh well, that’s a rant for another time I guess 😀 Gaming, like you, had been getting harder and harder to keep up but it’s good that you don’t do visual novels as well or you would have even more “headaches” D: Both of these eat up a lot of time.. >_<

    • That’s standard working hours for office workers I suppose. It takes a few minor sacrifices following this schedule I’m having right now like lesser anime, manga and almost no time allocated for games. Games are the ones that eat up the most time, which is also the reason why it’s no longer a priority on my schedule. I simply have no time for it.

  6. Being a research leader at the same time class secretary has drained of all the luxurious time I once can afford. . . . I barely even play games anymore, just trying to fit time for blogging and some anime. Man my time management sucks T^T . . . . I want to go back to days when I can play visual novels all I want without worrying 😦

    • You sound like a very busy person. >.< Yeah, I know what you mean. I sometimes wish I'm still a college student (minus the assignments and exams) so I can have more time for leisure.

  7. You can’t just leave aside some series this winter season. Where’s the love for Inu X Boku SS, Symphogear, etc?!

I really need to buy you a time machine…:P

  8. Tight schedule. Damn I hate to think about it when I’m going to start working.. Less anime, less games, less everything. Omg. I’m one month behind games. I haven’t played Kingdom and Reckoning and next will be Mass Effect 3, omg! Can’t wait for it to come out!

It’s nice to see that you have all the stuff I have as well, PS3, PSP, iPad2 😀 Not sure why you are having difficulty reading mangas on iPad2 because I’ve read some of them on mine and it was just fine. Maybe it is just one of the site. Just to let you know there are some apps for watching manga’s on iPad and iPhone. One that I’m using is MangaRock. Works

    • It also depends on what kind of job you have. Some jobs have flexible hours. Game’s the killer here. It’s taking a lot of time. Maybe I’m not a good player to begin with, that’s why I take longer hours to complete a game. >.< Haha, I know the feeling of anticipation for a new game to release!

Ah! Why didn't I think of using an app?! Gee, I have Mango for my Galaxy S2. Why didn't I download something for my iPad2?! -_- Right, I'll download MangaRock then. I was using the browser to read and it was a painful experience.

  10. Be happy if I could get some extra hours in the day, but I would proabably waste them tinkering with my computer and such instead of constructively. Ever since I brought my Nook Color, hack/modded it, and link all my web applications/readers together I have saved quite a bit of time and do not have to rely on my PC as much. Reading manga on the go is especially easier. Although despite this, I really do not have much time to waste, since the bulk of it goes toward trying to complete college and all the work that goes with it. 😛

    • What you said is true, even if I got what I wished for – a few extra hours a day – chances of me wasting it is there. I do think that having portable devices allows us to save some time especially when we’re on the move so we can actually do something useful during the “waiting” time, like wait for buses/food orders and such.

You sound like you have a lot of work to do for your college stuff. I wish you all the best! =)

  12. Your standard schedule sounds very similar to the one that I have as my goal to follow, with work, exercise, and play all fitting in to set slots. I admire that you have the energy to do cardio after a full day of work–I’m struggling to get the motivation to go exercise before my evening work shift. It’s refreshing to see an anime fan who has her act together in the working world.

I’m in a similar situation with the gaming issue, since I have an XBOX 360 that I now use mostly for Netflix. I never thought it possible, but I actually have a little backlog of games to play!

    • I don’t really know if I have my act together, but thank you for your kind words.

Lol, looks like most of us are having troubles with games. Gaming is so much fun, but it requires time as well. Unfortunately, it’s not something I have right now especially after I started working. T.T
